What is a Design, Budget and Sustainability Consultation?
And why should I pay for a consultation with you when others come out free? I hear you ask. I’ll let one of my happy customers answer that:
“I cannot stress enough, how important my initial appointment with Carrie was. It’s easy to be swayed by companies offering ‘free’ consultations but they don’t really ‘do’ the job. Carrie came up with ideas I hadn’t considered, opened my eyes to alternative possibilities, created a visual both for my extension and its impact on the house as a whole. It was like seeing its evolution occur before my eyes. I had initially only planned to pay for the first hour, but it was clear how valuable her service was even after 10 minutes! We spent a couple of hours creating the perfect space to compliment our home and family needs. After that, the next steps were clearly signposted, and it was a smooth and easy process from drawing to building. Take my advice, don’t skimp on getting the best, professional input at the start of a project or you’ll regret it down the line. I highly recommend Hampshire Architect and will be using again!”, Marie-Claire, Bitterne
I work through options with you as we walk around your home, taking into account planning, building regulations, party wall implications and other constraints such as services and drains. I then sketch with you at your table after measuring up so that you are fully involved. My easy to understand annotated sketch floor plans, detailed budget costings, colour artist’s impressions and connections with other professionals and tradespeople allow you to proceed with confidence. I carry out the often overlooked feasibility, design and costing stages personally to help you get the project right from the start. Once we’ve pinned down the right design to solve your brief together, I remain involved until the end of the build to answer any queries and help keep your project on track. To keep your costs down, I work closely with a local reputable technician for the planning, building regulations and construction drawings and applications, while remaining on hand to answer your queries right through until completion on site. This way you benefit from two experts and get the best of both worlds.

Consultation timeslots and what is included
I offer daytime consultations at 09:30 and 13:30, Monday to Friday. If you think you may want to move from consultation to measuring and sketching, once fees have been agreed, the 09:30 start is the best option to allow time to get more done and avoid waiting for a follow-up appointment. I also offer evening consultations Monday to Thursday, starting at 18:30.
There is an initial payment which covers a bespoke information pack sent to your door and half an hour of my time researching your property’s history and potential, so we can get straight into the useful creative part as soon as I arrive. There is an hourly charge for the consultation, which includes ideas, options and advice plus a detailed follow-up email full of notes and helpful links for your project and next steps, plus my travel within a 30-mile round trip of my base in Netley Abbey.
Sustainability advice
Increasingly important sustainability and future-proofing advice is included in the initial consultation. Please also take a look at the plethora of useful information on the ‘My Home Made Better’ website, a charity for whom I volunteer. They offer free impartial advice to help Hampshire residents make their homes more comfortable and healthy, while saving energy and money. You can also make the most of their free telephone consultation service. A visit to the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon is well worth the effort. It is also well worth subscribing to the Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine for a year and going to one of their many shows. (Rest assured, I never take commission from anyone I suggest).
